In light of the upcoming election, here are two resources we pray you'll find helpful. Below, you'll find a prayer guide with suggestions on how you can be praying throughout this season.
We've also created a voter guide containing a number of the biblical truths we hold that are related to issues being debated in our country today. Each statement is supported by Scripture to reflect on as you consider how to cast your ballot. This is not an exhaustive list, as Scripture presents many more values that define our faith. (Please see “The Truths We Live By” for more on what we believe.) Voter guides are also available to pick up at each of our campuses.
We encourage you to keep these prayers and values in the forefront of your heart and mind, not only in this election season, but at all times.Download voter guide
A Prayer of Confession
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. (James 5:16-18)
As we ask the Lord to hear our prayers, let us invite the Holy Spirit to examine our hearts and bring to mind our own failings.
A Prayer for Unity
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. (1 Corinthians 1:10)
We can all be united in wanting to see our communities thrive, our families healthy, our friends and neighbors come to know Christ as Savior, believers grow in their relationship with Christ, a Church that helps people find hope in the midst of whatever challenges they are facing.
A Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled … (Hebrews 12:14-15)
As a community of believers, we need to be quick to listen, slow to anger, and gracious in forgiving.
A Prayer for Wise Leadership
For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of His saints. (Proverbs 2:6-8)
Our nation faces challenges that are beyond the ability of one person or one political party to solve. Human wisdom is limited; we need divine help. God's wisdom is infinite and unconstrained by any present circumstance. Let's ask God to guide those in authority over us.
A Prayer for God's Will in the Election
Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to those who have understanding (Daniel 2:20-21)
The outcome of the election is within God's sovereign will. What happens will be no surprise to God.
A Prayer for Justice
Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause. (Isaiah 1:16-17)
The world is full of hurting people. We can ask God for eyes to see and hearts to help those in need.
A Prayer for Deliverance from Natural Disasters
By awesome deeds You answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; the One who by His strength established the mountains, being girded with might; who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples, so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy. You visit the earth and water it; You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. (Psalm 65:5-10)
Natural disasters have exacted a heavy toll on people, communities and our economy. We pray for deliverance from hurricanes, floods, wildfires, tornados, droughts and COVID-19.
A Prayer for Spiritual Protection
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that You may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and have done all, to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:10-13)
As Pastor David shared in his sermon on October 4, we have one common enemy, and the enemy's primary strategy against us is division.
