Prayer Challenge
28 Days of Prayer
- Make prayer a priority
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33)
Devotional
What is the first thing you do each morning? Do you run to your first class or to work!? Hoping you will make it on time. Maybe you’re a new parent, and the first part of the day is always at a different time. Do you spend the first part of your day checking your phone while you wait to feel just a little more awake? Or, maybe you follow a routine to the T so that you can say you start your day perfectly. How we start our day can influence how the rest of our day will go.
Although, there are some seasons when it feels impossible to prioritize time with God, and some of us are just not wired to get up at 5:00 AM and have a perfect quiet time. (If that is you, we don’t know how you do it!) But God promises us that if we put Him in the highest place of honor in our lives, then HE will add all that we need. So this month, set aside a time to pray each day, challenge yourself to take 5, 10, or 15 minutes and humbly talk with God.
Can I challenge you further? Schedule your daily prayer time during the part of the day that you are at your best! Are you a morning person? Then schedule this in the morning! Night owl? Then create some space for prayer in the evening. Have you struggled to pray in the past? Commit to praying when you have the best energy and are most alert. I believe that seeking first the kingdom of God doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the first thing we do each day (although it is a wonderful thing for many). I believe Jesus calls us to give our best to God’s kingdom. What better way to do that than to spend 5-10 minutes of our best energy talking intentionally and intimately with God?
Lord, You are powerful, and know everything that I need for today. It is easy to keep my eyes fixed on my to-do list, earthly relationships, or circumstances that I forget to put You and Your ways first! Forgive me for allowing these small things become greater than You.
Draw my heart toward You and Your righteousness. Grant to me today a love for You and Your ways that far exceeds all my worldly desires or responsibilities. In every way, Jesus, I want You to be the Lord of my Life. Help me to trust You for everything I need. Amen.
Parent Prompt
As a family, what are some ways you can make prayer a priority? Set aside and commit to a specific time each day that you are going to pray as a family. Be creative! Maybe it’s on your drive to school, at dinner time, right before bed – or maybe you even find a room in your home that can be your “prayer challenge” room for the month! You’ll also want to consider creating a family prayer journal that can be used throughout this prayer challenge. Pray that God will change your family through prayer and that as a family, you will see God in all things.
