- Strengthening Your Faith through Prayer

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (Jeremiah 33:3)

Devotional

One day a local pastor got a call from a very distraught young lady in his church with an urgent prayer request. The young lady had been going to college and studying for the past two years to get her nursing license and become a nurse. When she took the final exam to get her license to become a nurse, she failed. The young lady was crushed by the fact she had failed her test and needed someone to pray for her. The pastor felt so badly for her when he heard the story and could feel her despair, but it only got worse. The young lady went on to tell him that there was more to the prayer request; not only did she fail, but she just found out that her husband had been having an affair with a co-worker for a while now too!

The pastor listened, prayed with her, and then asked if he could share her request with a small, discreet prayer team in the church. The young lady said that would be fine. When the pastor met with his prayer team, he told the story and shared the request. After he shared, one of the ladies said my husband had an ongoing affair for years, and I thought I would never make it through and be willing to share with her how God’s grace got me through it all. Then one of the other ladies spoke up and said she was on the State Licensing Board of Nursing and would be willing to help her study for her licensing exam.

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

Jeremiah heard this Word from the Lord while he was confined. His situation was not good, and his future did not look hopeful … but God’s promise was true. Jeremiah was imprisoned, but God had not left him.

The Word God had for Jeremiah was one of hope and promise that strengthened his faith. No matter what circumstances you find yourself in, God is in the right place at the right time with the right answer that gives us hope.

Sample Prayer:

Father, there are times I struggle and I feel stuck. Sometimes I am afraid and feel like there is no way out. Please help me feel Your presence, God. Work in ways I may not understand, and use me in ways that You need to. Give me hope and give me strength. Amen.

Parent Prompt

What are some ways you have seen God work in your family? Write down, in your family prayer journal, some fears/worries/concerns that your family currently has. Then bring those specific things to God together in prayer. Pray expectantly – knowing God is going to answer! Pray that your family’s faith will be strengthened.
