- A heart for obedience
I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. (Psalm 40:8)
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! (Psalm 143:10)
Devotional
We face temptations each day. We can try hard to avoid them, and we should! But there will be temptations – opportunities for my heart and yours to wander. It could be a lustful thought, a convenient lie to make us look good to others, or even thinking too highly of ourselves and not acknowledging God’s grace. Sometimes temptations are so powerful they can steal our entire focus. When those moments happen, we need to pause, pray, or even call a friend to pray with us. Other times, the trap is something we can’t even see. Like a fine net around a fish, you may already be caught and not even know it. What can we do about these kinds of temptations, the powerful and the unseen things that draw us away from God? Pray.
It is through prayer that my temptations can be replaced with a greater desire: a desire to please God, a desire to be close to Him. My temptations tell me they will fulfill me if only I surrender to them. So, what do we do about temptation? Put as many miles between you and the enemy as you can. Get serious about it! Don’t see how close to the fire you can get without getting burned. See how far away you can get! What God offers is greater, and He provides freedom, but only as we surrender to Him. God is more powerful than your temptations, your vices, and your addictions. Surrender to Him daily, and He will guide your heart to delight in His ways!
Father in Heaven, I need your Holy Spirit to keep me from sin. At times my pride and my flesh are so powerful it feels like there is no way out. Would you guide my heart toward you in those moments? I surrender my desires and my ambition to you, Jesus. I know that you are the only one who will fulfill me. Forgive me for not trusting you fully and allowing my heart to wander. Lord, show me the things in my life that I have not surrendered to you. Help me to see my life as you see it, show me the motives and desires in my heart that are not honoring to you, rid me of these sins, and give me strength to face the parts of my heart that I would rather ignore. You are the only one with the power to transform my rebel heart, Lord; please let your will be done in my life. Grant to me today a heart of obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Parent Prompt
We know that being tempted is not a sin, it is the giving into the temptation that makes it a sin. With this in mind, how can we avoid things in our lives that tempt us to sin?
