- Deliverance from temptation
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Devotional
Jesus understood temptation and what could occur if temptation wasn’t resisted. The sin that Jesus came to die for was the result of Adam and Eve giving into temptation. Today, as in every generation, we face a very real battle because we live in a broken and sinful world. This battle is being fought for the heart of every person. This is why Jesus told the disciples to watch and pray so that they wouldn’t enter into temptation. He knows our spirits are willing, but our flesh is weak.
As Jesus says in John 16, He has overcome the world, but that doesn’t mean as believers we aren’t involved in this battle and aren’t susceptible to temptation. The fact that we are believers, though, tells us that we aren’t fighting for victory, but from victory. The victory has already been won; we just need to pray that we would not be led into temptation and that we would be delivered from evil. When we overcome temptation, remembering the prayer Jesus taught us, we are protecting our faith, our future, and our families. We are fighting a spiritual battle, so we need to use spiritual weapons. If we pray, God will deliver us from temptation.
As we read in 1 Corinthians 10, God will always provide a way of escape. So when temptation comes, and it will, turn to God for strength and know that He understands what you are experiencing. In a world filled with temptation, we have a stronghold against the enemy because our God is a deliverer.
Let’s pray this day for Jesus to deliver us and the ones we love from temptation.
Jesus, we face a very real battle because we live in a broken and sinful world. There is a battle is being fought for the heart of every person, including mine. You tell us that when we pray, you will deliver us, so I pray today that you will deliver us and help us overcome the temptations of the enemy, so that we can live in the way you have called us. I pray these things in Jesus name, Amen.
